It was October 12, , the day that Bs’ guitarist and key composer Ricky Wilson died of AIDS, crippling the Athens, Georgia-based group both personally and professionally.
The fact that the Bs were the ultimate New Wave, let’s-have-a-party band of the 80s the upbeat, whacked-out, wigged-out chroniclers of kitsch, the guys and gals who percolated with campy feel-good vibes, the creators of a fanciful world better than our hold – only accentuated the irony of the real-world loss. That something so tragic and final was interjected into this upbeat band’s life and, certainly, the lives of its fans.
The front-folks in the Bs were the dramatic ones: Singer-Cindy Wilson (Ricky’s sister) and singer-keyboardist Kate Pierson – the ones with the beehive hairdos (hence the band’s Southern slang name) and singer Fred Schneider. But Wilson’s oft-minor key surf guitar licks were central to the band’s other-worldly sound. (Add to that some cheesy Farfisa organ riffs, the giddy call-and-response male/female vocals.)
He played a Mosrite guitar and favored characteristic open tu

AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is a frightening disease. It is a degenerative illness that is usually fatal, though in at least some cases its progress can be slowed and the patient’s experience extended. Often, it is not AIDS itself that is fatal. As its full name implies, AIDS weakens the body’s immune system. Consequently, another disease – such as cancer or pneumonia – is contracted and it is this secondary infection that leads to death. Though it may not be strictly accurate, AIDS is often associated with homosexuality. Ricky Wilson of The B’s dies as a result of AIDS-related illness. He was quiet about his sexuality, but that is one of the few quiet things about The B’s.
Ricky Helton Wilson (19 March October ) is born in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. His younger sister, Cynthia Leigh Wilson, is born on 28 February Ricky and Cindy share a birthplace and will both grow members of The B’s. Ricky and Cindy are the children of Bobby Jack
Sorry, but I comprehend them. The Bs are actually assholes.
Well, I don’t recognize them, but there are occasional comments made via their fb page. Fred seems obsessed with knock off merchandise. Some old fan made a B52 quilt, and he took issue with it being sold. First off, it was an antique fan that made their own quilt, not some factory product that went viral.
There’s reason to believe they’re just getting by. Especially if Fred is selling Amway. I didn’t know that shit still existed. Pics by weird fans show up on fb, of Rickys’ grave. It is the most modest little lump of concrete - in a minute town in the middle of nowhere. Most bands that don’t go global long term are doing just a little bit surpass than getting by, especially since covid, smaller bands obtain huge hits with expenses when travelling.
I saw them achieve early on with this final tour. My honest perspective, and I’ve loved them since around They are past needing to retire. Last should’ve been years ago, when they still had energy. Fred started off with all for a scant songs, then buggered off backstage for 20 minutes. The women

What’s the first thing you consider of when you hear the words, “Tin roof, rusted!”? If you answered “Love Shack” by the Bs then pat yourself on the back. That unattached, the biggest hit of the B’s career, finally earned the group the widespread mainstream attention it justly deserved. It was also considered a comeback for the band from Athens, GA, following the devastating loss of co-founding member Ricky Wilson. Those in the know who had been following the Bs since the band’s self-titled debut album (featuring the single “Rock Lobster”) were free to gloat as their friends and family caught on to what they knew all along – the Bs were superstars. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Cosmic Thing (Rhino/Reprise), the album on which “Love Shack” appeared, an expanded edition has been released, featuring five bonus B-sides and remixes as well as a second live disc. Fred Schneider, the Bs lead male vocalist, was kind enough to answer a few questions before the band embarked on a multi-city concert tour.
