With no gay bar or space to call its own, Newport's LGBTQ collective feels 'isolated'

NEWPORT — Even before the COVID pandemic, Daniel Cano-Restrepo said the LGBTQ community in the city had felt estranged.

“There is a community out there, it’s just somehow disconnected,” Cano-Restrepo said. “A lgbtq+ bar or an LGBT establishment, of course there is a need for that, and the society will respond to that place.”

Cano-Restrepo and his loved one, Sean O’Connor, run NewportOUT, a website dedicated to marketing Newport as a tourism destination to LGBTQ travelers. Although several bars host events for the community, the two said the area still needs a space to socialize and express themselves.

“It would certainly be a massive asset for the people, not only locally, but for, you know, that travel tourism aspect of things,” O’Connor said.

Several same-sex attracted bars have opened and closed in the metropolis, but there has not been one in operation since The last one, Castaways, was open for just two years at the former location of the city’s longest-running gay block, David’s, which had closed years before

A Few Fun Facts About Newp

LGBT+ Sports Club Finder

That’s club as in nightclub, not football club. You don’t need to be ‘a member’, wear a extraordinary kit or have any particular skill for bowling. So there are no pre-requisites for attendance.

We were founded in by newlyweds Marc & Luke — who had just moved to Manchester, and had no idea how to make friends in a new city. They invited the few people they knew to come bowling one Wednesday, and extended the invite to friends-of-friends. The rest, as they say, is history.

In the years since, we’ve expanded our presence to cities across the UK, helped forge hundreds of brand-new friendships, and proudly represented the UK at international LGBTQ+ ten-pin tournaments across Europe.

It turns out, homosexual people everywhere need a way of making novel friends.

If you’re one of them, we’d love to meet you sometime.

Love and pins,

Team GCB x

P.S. Don’t let the name fool you - everyone from across the rainbow is welcome, not just homosexual men. It was just too good a wordplay to resist.
