This New Chevrolet Ad Proves Corporate America Has Made Its Judgment On Gay Marriage

It's official: Corporate America supports gay marriage.

In ads that ran Friday late hours during the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics, all-American car manufacturer Chevrolet spotlighted a melange of diverse, real-life families that included gay couples, interracial couples, and couples that were both gay and interracial.

The ads, made by Commonwealth Detroit, make Chevrolet the first brand to show a gay couple in an ad at the Olympics and the latest in a long line of major companies that possess explicitly associated themselves with lgbtq+ marriage in their advertising.

In keen contrast to the anti-gay policies of the Olympics host territory, Russia, the default setting for America's biggest corporations these days is one that accepts, if not promotes, gay marriage.

Chevrolet's statement follows an outbreak of branded celebrations that occurred when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Execute this past June. The verdict forced overturned a law banning the federal government

Chevrolet Volt's full page ad in Between The Lines' June Pride issue has taken the blogosphere and social networks by storm, receiving praise from LGBT and automobile bloggers, male lover press and even George Takei.
The advertisement features a silver Chevrolet Volt "coming out" to a Tahoe and Cruze – or "parents, – and announcing "Mom, Dad, I'm electric." Below, the ad explains, "Volt runs on an electric battery and a gas generator. So, whatever revs your engine, we support you %. Happy Motor City Celebration from the entire Chevrolet family."
This clever ad both acknowledges LGBT shoppers' eco-friendly purchasing habits and draws parallels between the marginalization of electric automobiles and the LGBT community.
Within 24 hours, the ad emerged on numerous websites commended as Chevrolet's official coming out for the LGBT community.

Chevrolet Showcases Gay Families in Olympics Opening Ceremony Ad

In a first, Chevrolet features queer families in its ad during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

Coming just a week after Coke made waves when it aired the first Super Bowl ad to showcase a set of same-sex parents, the car-maker's new campaign is called "The New Us" and portrays a series of wide-ranging families.

"And while what it means to be a family hasn't changed," intones the Chevrolet narration over clips that encompass nuclear families, mixed race couples, adoptive parents, same-sex attracted and lesbian parents, combinations of the above, and others, "what a family looks like, has. This is the new us."

The games have been criticized for taking place in Russia, which has made "gay propaganda" illegal. Earlier this week the deputy prime minister of Russia warned gay Olympic athletes not to touch children.

Chevrolet's new ad was welcomed by the gay community.

"Chevrolet has nailed it with ads that truly convey the fabric of our nation, which today includes gay and lesbian families," said GLAAD President and CEO
