There is a fine line between a character’s previously hidden homosexuality being a nice twist and it entity a punchline. Unfortunately, when it comes to “Mamma Mia”, I fear we are romping wildly in punchline territory.
I have watched the film multiple times, and one of its most appealing qualities (aside from, hello? Meryl Streep performing ABBA songs) is its rare and genuinely exuberant celebration of middle aged female sexuality. Sadly, but hardly surprisingly, this applies only to direct women. And while this is the kind of mainstream clip that you might expect to include gay men in its welcoming bosom (did I refer Meryl Streep performing ABBA songs?) its efforts are fairly minimal.
I gather that it is much clearer in the stage authentic that Colin Firth’s character Harry is gay. And though you might think it is made fairly obvious in the production &#; Harry tells Donna “You were the first women I ever loved&#; and also the last” before casting a sultry glance at a young male local &#; it is not

I was raised on ABBA’s music. My parents owned lots of CDs, but after my brother destroyed them by lining them up and stepping on them, we mostly listened to three of the survivors on repeat. One of them was ABBA Gold. My expectations walking into the Novello Theatre were therefore very high.
I have seen both the movies, although I didn’t see the first one until the first year of uni (he who is without sin cast the first stone), and fell in love with Meryl Streep and Lily James. But watching it on stage, live, made me realize why Mamma Mia has such a wide and dedicated lgbtq+ fanbase. And yes – it’s not just because of the (many, many) topless guys or the glittery outfits (I’m still scarred by the former and in love with the latter).
The first thing I realized is that even though Mamma Mia’s basic plot is about a wedding, the story is about so much more. In fact, Sophie and Sky’s relationship didn’t feel like the most important plotline in the musical – the actual heroes are of course
Harry Bright
Harry Bright is an English banker and he is one of Sophie Sheridan&#;s possible fathers along with Sam Carmichael and Bill Austin, and is the ex-lover of Donna Sheridan-Carmichael. It is written in Donna&#;s diary on August 11 that Harry «turned up out of the blue.» His sweet and comprehending nature results in Donna showing him the island and possibly the conception of Sophie Sheridan.
Personality
Harry is described by Donna as entity very «sweet» and «understanding.» He also considers himself quite a rebel in his younger days, sporting a leather jacket, a slick hair, participating in rocker culture, and expressing disinterest in his future in banking. In the compete, Harry attends the wedding seeking to be as spontaneous as he once was. Upon conclusion out he is a father, he embraces the role, even once it is revealed he is only one-third of Sophie&#;s father.
His eagerness to provide Sophie emotional and financial support uncover his loving essence, and he never blames Donna for keeping Sophie confidential, suggesting he is also very forgivin Anonymous asked:

I think I’ve been watching the wrong production all this time, because I’ve never actually seen that part, anon.
Here’s the thing- we don’t actually know too terribly much about what happened beyond Sophie fainting. I am to assume yes, Harry and Petros had spent time together that night beyond the tiny glimpses we saw in the film (just as I would assume Bill and Rosie had as well) and I realize the actor had once said he had a beach scene with Colin that was cut, so perhaps that was supposed to be during the party. We will never know, since the scene was cut and never released even as a deleted scene. Unless it was after the wedding, I can’t personally notice that that scene would have carried too much weight anyway, because that would have ruined the stupid “Harry is gay!” reveal. I certainly don’t think it would possess shown Harry and Petros having sex.
