How Blue Eye Samurais Exploration of Mixed Race Identity Helps It Break All of the Boxes in Animated Storytelling

Ahead of the Blue Eye Samurais debut last Friday, co-creator, executive producer and co-writer Amber Noizumi revealed the deeply personal inspiration for the adult animated tale of revenge position in a 17th century Japan and starring a mixed-race master of the sword.
The concept was conceived 15 years ago, after the birth of Noizumi and co-creator Michael Greens daughter. She was born with sky eyes, prompting the half-Japanese Noizumi to wonder, “Why am I so elated that my daughter has blue eyes? What’s the massive deal about that? And why am I so ecstatic that I hold a baby who looks more white?”
Its the kind of interrogate that many who identify within the biracial, multiracial or mixed-race communities — particularly those with immediate white family or ancestry — find themselves asking at some show. The answer is complex and sometimes painful but can also be revelatory and freeing. And it

Just wanted to share this:
Reader surprising Mizu by complimenting her eyes, but Thomas O’Mallley words (from The Aristocats, or you might be more familiar with the audio from TikTok):“Why, your eyes are like sapphires sparkling so bright. They construct the morning radiant and light.”
Like, Reader sees Mizu’s eyes for the first time and their eyes widen in shock while Mizu just stares. Then Reader says “Your eyes-” and Mizu glares at first, already assuming that Reader will insult her like most people normally would when they notice the color of her eyes, but becomes surprised when Reader finishes with “-are like sapphires so bright. They make the morning radiant and light.” in an awe tone rather than one of fright.
Note: not sure if Edo Japan know what sapphires look like, but this would be considered fiction anyway.
One of many things I like about Blue Eye Samurai is how it portrays its disabled characters. There’s a lot to talk about with each of them but for this post, I hope for to talk about, not the step dad, but the dad who stepped up, Sword Father!
*Spoilers below
Him and Mizu’s partnership is one of my favorite dynamics in the show and seeing how that developed over the years was one of my favorite things about the pilot. It felt very symbiotic and excellent for the both of them emotionally to possess that company and back, especially on Mizu’s end.
I really liked seeing how the two worked together and how Mizu accommodated to his needs. I also liked the respect given to Sword Father’s ability to take look after of himself as an adult even without Mizu’s assistance. He’s been blacksmithing for years and he’s respected in his line of work. Losing his sight did not and does not change that.
I personally think the show does a superb job at balancing the reality of him existence blind and the accommodations he needs while also respecting him as an autonomous individual and talking about his blin
