Tony curtis was gay
Despite his unforgettable performance in Some Like It Hot, Tony Curtis isnt exactly popular with Marilyns fans, due to his cruel comments about working with her, and dubious claim that they had an affair (see here.) However, theres no doubt that Curtis was one of Hollywoods great post-war stars. As a retrospective begins at MoMA in New York with Some Like It Hot screening on October 15th Jackson Arn looks back on his career for The Forward.
Interestingly, Arn suggests that Curtis was playing gay in his love scene with Marilyn. Although Some Like It Hot is replete with camp humour, and Jack Lemmons personality arc has homoerotic overtones, the same cannot be said for Curtis as the womanizing player Joe/Josephine/Junior. Even in drag, his sights are firmly on Sugar, and he ultimately feigns impotence to seduce her. But perhaps Arns observation speaks to ambiguities in the Curtis persona that surpassed the limits of his role.
Long after he became wealthy and famous, he had a lean and hungry look. This look was his greatest tribute as a performer

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Tony Curtis took advantage of the GI Bill to study drama. He earned good reviews in an off-Broadway production of Golden Boy, and was almost immediately offered a contract with Universal Studios.
In , he was arrested at Heathrow Airport with a small amount of marijuana, and in later years he snorted cocaine with his daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis. In subsequent decades he said he was clean and sober, and there were no further arrests.
In , Curtis was paid a $50, advance by Doubleday Books to write a novel, but when he turned in the manuscript in they declared it unreadable and sued to recover the advance. Curtis argued that Doubleday had provided next to no editorial assistance -- just one comment from any of the company's editors over four years, and the comment had been favorable. Curtis won, but Doubleday appealed and won back the advance in a higher court.

Im telling you Tony Curtiss Brooklyn accent is as thick and redolent and comforting as a slice of New York pizza with extra extra cheese getting dressed as a woman is no easy experience. You can get very intimidated by it.
Curtis is recalling his stint in s Some Like It Hot, in which he played a musician named Joe who, along with his pal Jerry (the irrepressible Jack Lemmon), witness the St. Valentines Morning Massacre and hide out from the mob dolled up as Josephine and Daphne, joining an all-girl big band. Critic Roger Ebert called the Billy Wilder screwball classic an enduring treasure of the movies, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft, and in , the film took the number one spot in the American Film Institutes azure ribbon film industry poll of the Funniest American Movies. (Hot was trailed by Tootsie, another cross-dressing romp, and Stanley Kubricks dark and brilliant Dr. Strangelove.)
Forty-three years later, the year-old player is back in the Some Like It Hot saddle only this
Tony Curtis seems such a sweet man in person.
He’s in Montreal to acknowledge his lifetime achievement award from the World Production Festival, and to hock his memoir, American Prince.
At one point, Curtis takes my hand firmly, and tells me how amazing it is to encounter up with people enjoy me and talk about his life. And it is a life —as evidenced by the book.
There were the landmark clip roles, of course —among them his turns in Sweet Smell of Victory (), The Defiant Ones () and Some Favor It Hot () —but Curtis’ off-screen shenanigans contain been every bit as titillating.
Sitting and listening to Curtis, now 83, look back on his life is not comparable to a sit-down with your average grandpa. When I bring up Marilyn Monroe, his co-star in Some Like It Blazing and also his companion , he’s quite blunt about, well, how she tasted.
